Basic Purpose: To oversee the Unitarian Universalist Association’s (UUA’s) financial books and records and ensure their integrity; to manage the financial reporting process; to implement appropriate control systems; and to oversee the day-to-day operations of the Financial Services staff group. Principal Responsibilities 1. Supervises the Financial Services staff group (of 6 currently), which is responsible for payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, current operations, endowment funds management, the building loan and guarantee program, and financial reporting. This includes the training and cross-training of staff, performance reviews, and other personnel actions. 2. Establishes a rigorous control environment by developing, documenting, communicating, and implementing financial policies and procedures throughout the UUA. 3. Oversees the accurate and timely preparation and distribution of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports. Prepares special reports and analyses as needed. Analyzes financial reports and makes recommendations. 4. Manages two annual audits for the UUA and the Employee Benefits Trust (EBT)—the UUA’s self-funded health plan—in collaboration with Treasurer. Schedules and assigns tasks to Financial Services staff for preparation of workpapers and supporting materials in a timely manner. Serves as principle liaison to the auditors throughout the planning, preparation, and fieldwork stages of the process. 5. Collaborates with Treasurer in the preparation of the annual budget. Monitors income and expenses against budget throughout the year, bringing all exceptional items and trends to the attention of upper management. 6. Leads the process of continual improvement by introducing streamlined procedures, new technologies, and system upgrades. 7. Develops departmental objectives and plans annual work schedule in collaboration with Treasurer and staff. Prepares departmental budget and manages expenses to budget. 8. Coordinates with the Stewardship and Development staff group to ensure that all gifts and pledges are properly recorded and expenditures are consistent with donor intent as expressed in gift instruments. Ensures that restricted gifts and income are reported to appropriate staff in a timely manner. 9. Monitors and manages the UUA’s working capital and cash flow including annual cash budget. 10. Assures that staff groups’ information needs are met and that managers receive the reports, analyses, and reconciliations necessary for them to do their jobs effectively. 11. Manages the employer and employee contributions to the UUA benefit plans and related reporting. 12. Maintains financial records and oversees the financial reporting for the EBT. 13. Collaborates with the Treasurer to assure that the UUA maintains prudent levels of insurance. 14. Performs additional duties as requested by supervisor, the Executive Vice President, or the President. Qualifications: Applicants should have at least 10 years’ relevant experience with at least 5 years’ experience in a non-profit environment. A masters degree in accounting, MBA and/or CPA a plus. The successful candidate will have a thorough knowledge of endowments, charitable trust accounting, employee benefit trusts, and accounting for charitable restricted contributions. Excellent MS Excel skills expected and knowledge of Financial Edge and ADP software would be helpful.
